Fun with Google’s Code Search

Google Labs has a tool called Code Search which allows you search through source code. It can search inside tars, zips, and even dives into CVS and Subversion repositories. Ben Orenstein did a search for comments which yielded some interesting and funny results.

Happy Birthday Perl / Perl 5.10 Released

Almost on the 20th Birthday of Perl, Perl 5.10 is released. This release is the first major upgrade to the language in 5 years. Two of the major new features are the smart match operator and a switch statement.

Perl’s alive and kicking in the job market

A recent post at PerlBuzz.com shows that Perl is anything but dead in the marketplace. The graph, built on Dice.com data, shows that Perl jobs are 2.5 times

more prevalent than PHP, 4.5 times more than Python and 9.5 times more than Ruby. Long live Perl!

RubyConf 2007 in Charlotte

If you missed YAPC in Houston and OSCON in Portland, you have a chance to catch another Open Source conference right here in our own backyard. RubyConf 2007 will be held Nov 2-4 at the Omni Charlotte Hotel. Tickets are $250 (more than YAPC but less than OSCON).

Programming on the Web today can involve any of several technologies, but the Common Gateway Interface (CGI) has held its ground as the most mature method–and one of the most powerful ones–of providing dynamic web content.
